My delayed arrival in India (4 months late, which is late even by my standards) meant that the smooth induction the office had carefully thought through and planned for me was effectively thrown out of the window! My actual arrival date coincided with a Bioenergy workshop being held at an institute in Delhi. The workshop started with a dinner at the High Commissioners house, which isn’t a bad way to start a new job! Though sadly the food was English in style rather than Indian – I guess that is what the Indian delegates expect from a High Commission Dinner!
The workshop was looking at various aspects of bioenergy research (e.g. biomass, algae and anaerobic digestion), which were debated and discussed during various sessions to find research areas of interest to both the UK and Indian researchers and funders (yep, this is what I do in case anyone still wasn’t sure!). Workshops are a normal part of my job, and I have organised these in the UK previously. However, I’m not used to attending workshops which are held in silk marquees on lawns under the Indian sunshine. The venue looked more like a wedding than a conference! The workshop was a big success, and the outcomes will be keeping me and the team busy over the coming months!
