As
the UK wholeheartedly threw itself into the Jubilee celebrations last weekend, us Brits out
here didn't want to be left out, so the British High Commission organised
our own Jubilee Picnic last Sunday. We
were quite concerned that even though it started at 5pm, it was going to be too
hot to be possible, but luckily a small storm rolled in during the afternoon
and so the temperature was ok (probably only 39deg!).
The
star of the day was Rupa the elephant, who spent the afternoon walking up and
down the road outside my office with excited children riding on his back! Sadly, all the non-parent adults had to wait
until all the children had had a turn, but by that time it was dark, and I
didn’t fancy climbing up a ladder onto the back of an elephant in the dark, so
I didn’t get a turn! L
As
you can see from the picture below, apart from the elephant the afternoon
involved ham and mustard sandwiches (after a long, but successful hunt for
ham), lots of cake, bunting, beer and pimms while watching the Thames
Flotilla. The pagent was broadcast live
here on BBC Entertainment, so we got to watch the whole thing (wow – did that
drag on!)!
All
in all a successful, patriotic party!
